The way the Nanaimo Infusion caught on in 2025 was like capturing lightning in a bottle - there were so many strange circumstances that came together to capture the interest of our city and our potential visitors. We know that a groundswell like this is very hard to create organically. Attention is a precious commodity and your infusion depends in part on getting the attention of your community and capturing the interest of your chosen target audience (Americans, US healthcare workers, families?).
Here we offer a few suggestions from our experience that could contribute to building your megaphone:
- Keep it simple: Don’t burden your Infusion with too much to say or share. Keep the purpose and the information basic and easy to repeat. We had a one line explanation to help us answer the “what is this?” “Why?” And “what events are you hosting?”
- Keep it real: don’t obsess about perfect, instagram-worthy graphics or scripts. Remember, in 2025 Tod flippantly invited Americans to “come visit” our city while he was waiting for a match on his Xbox to start. It was real and it was engaging because it felt personal and grassroots. It was one of those “why don’t we…” invites.
- Keep it infectious: Tod and I are just regular people who think we have a cool city with a lot to share. The original video had a higher goal of helping our city resist economic sanctions and threats to Canada that made it easy to agree with, but also a “why don’t you join us?” Call to action.
- Keep communicating - social media is no bulletin board, it’s more like a drumbeat. It’s something you have to stoke. What you win is engagement and (if you’re lucky) vitality. Share your journey as you put together your Infusion.
- Keep building interest before you ask your audience to commit with an RSVP. A strong number of RSVPs will boost interest even further.
- Plug your Discord server or comparable online community space. Regular engagement there will help pull more people in.
- Identify megaphones in your community: who does your community listen to or watch? Invite help from these “megaphones” to help.
- Talk to everyone you can - you never know who can help. Ask your city/region, ask your local representatives like city councillors, provincial and federal elected representatives.
