If the red lanyards are how strangers find each other, the Conversation Tags are how they actually start talking.

A Conversation Tag is a small nametag sticker. The idea is people write a topic they’re passionate about and would like to chat with others about (instead of their name).

The badge does one job: give two strangers a reason to start a conversation that is not about the weather.

This matters more than it sounds like it should. The Infusion is a weekend where hundreds of strangers are trying to figure out whether they like each other and whether they like the place. Every shortcut you can give them to skip past awkward small talk is worth something. The Conversation Tags are the best shortcut we have found.

Make it clear that wearing them is totally optional.

How to make them

They are Avery labels (Avery is a Canadian company!). The size we bought gave us 10 to a page, and 100 sheets in the box for about $50. That’s 1,000 stickers.

I printed the Infusion logo and “Ask Me About” on them to be fancy, but you can also just leave them blank with some markers. If you’ve got a sign like the above, people will get it.

Les Étiquettes de Conversation

Si les Cordons rouges aident des étrangers à s’identifier les uns les autres, les Étiquettes de Conversation sont un déclencheur.

Ce sont de simples autocollants comme les porte-noms. Les gens y inscrivent un sujet qui les passionnent et dont ils voudraient discuter avec d’autres (plutôt que leur nom).

Cette étiquette n’a qu’un but : donner à deux étrangers une raison de parler d’un autre sujet que la température.

Cet exercice est plus important qu’il semble être à priori. L’Infusion est une fin-de-semaine où plusieurs centaines d’étrangers cherchent à savoir s’ils se plaisent avec les autres, et s’ils aiment l’endroit. Chaque raccourci leur permettant d’éviter les banalités est une valeur sure. Ces Étiquettes sont le meilleur raccourci que nous avons trouvé.

Soyez clair que le port de ceux-ci n’est pas obligatoire.
