Social media is where your event will live for the months leading up to it.
The basic rhythm is:
- Months out: build awareness. Post the announcement video. Share the website. Re-share the video periodically with new captions. Post photos of your community.
- Weeks out: build anticipation. Highlight specific local businesses. Profile a local hike, a local restaurant, a local maker. Show the place visitors are coming to see.
- Days out: build practical readiness. Parking information. Weather forecasts. The schedule for Saturday. Reminders to wear a red lanyard.
- The day of: capture and share. Post the family photo. Repost what visitors are sharing. Tag people. Make it feel alive.
- The week after: reinforce. Thank-you posts to volunteers, partners, local media. The numbers (how many people came, where they came from). One or two visitor stories.
A few principles:
- Use real photos. Visitors trust photos that look like they were taken by a real person, not a marketing department.
- Tag local businesses. They will share your posts to their followers. This is free reach.
- Reply to comments. Especially questions. Especially in the last two weeks before the weekend.
- Cross-post, but customize. What works on Instagram is different from what works on Facebook is different from what works on TikTok. Even small adjustments to caption and crop make a difference.
- Do not buy ads. You do not need to. The story is interesting enough to spread on its own. Spending money on ads usually means spending money on people who will not actually attend.
