How we got here.

All of our social media stuff — the national Healthcare Infusion movement, the Canadian snack project, the Chucklehead fundraiser, the Canada is Not Broken project — all started with a short video Tod made a year and a half ago, inviting Americans to come up to Vancouver Island for the weekend and spend some of their beautiful freedom dollars in our economy. We called it the Nanaimo Tourism Infusion.

We thought maybe a half dozen would show up.

300 came. Then we did it again the following year. More than 600 showed up. A third of them were healthcare workers, checking our community out.

We started a web site and a chat room to help those people, called it the Nanaimo Healthcare Infusion, and that model is now working in 44 communities across the country. But the big weekend event? The tourism focused one?

We want to help you pull that off in your community too.

So, over the last month, evenings and weekends, Jocelyn and I have been working on this resource guide with everything we learned about setting one of these up.

About you

This handbook is for volunteers. It assumes you have never planned a community event before. It assumes you have a day job. It assumes you do not have a budget for a tourism agency, an event planner, or a PR firm.

It also assumes something more important: that you live somewhere worth visiting, that you know the people who make your community what it is, and that you want to invite the rest of the country (or the rest of the continent) to come see it for themselves.

Your Mileage May Vary

This is by no means a definitive list of things you must do. This is just how it worked for us. Adapt it as you like.

Usage Rights

This handbook is free to read and use for your own Canadian community.
