Hi — I’m Tod. My wife and I live in Harewood. I’m basically a nobody.

Earlier this month, I made a TikTok video inviting Americans to come up to Nanaimo on the same weekend, and spend their money in our economy. The video went viral.

More than 2,000 people signed up, saying they are more than likely going to come to Nanaimo on that weekend April 25-27.

I have a local business. Can I promote it?

Wait, we can’t handle that many in our city at once!

We can, and we do it all the time.

Even if 500 or more people come, Nanaimo routinely hosts 700 and more people in the city at a time.

There are more than 900 hotel rooms in Nanaimo, not to mention campgrounds, b&b’s, and all the options in the nearby mid-Island communities.

We’ve had that many, and more, in our city at one time — and you probably didn’t even notice.

Who WILL notice are the stores, restaurants, attractions, shops, hotels, campgrounds, and other businesses who will get a much-needed injection of money during a slow season — especially during a time when the tariffs will be hurting the mid-Island economy hard.

So they’re all going to come?

Not all, no, but even if a quarter show up, that’s going to have a huge positive impact on Nanaimo’s economy that weekend.

I’m a local. Can I help?

If you have a Discord account, I’d love to get more local people in our Discord server to answer questions these people have.

What events are you coordinating?

Other than a big family photo we’ll all take Saturday in Maffeo Sutton, I’m not coordinating any events. This is just a weekend where, with any luck, several hundred people will come and walk around, see our Island, spend money, meet people, and so on.

Nanaimo is on the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. My family and I are grateful for the opportunity to work, live, and play on their ancestral lands.
